Lake Shelbyville is a favorite destination for fishermen seeking largemouth bass, crappie, white bass, bluegill, channel catfish, walleye and muskie. The lake offers hunting opportunities for whitetail deer, squirrel, quail, pheasant, rabbit, mourning dove and waterfowl. Coon Creek Recreation Area is located north of the city of Shelbyville on the west side of the lake. Coon Creek has 207 electric sites of which 125 are reservable. Coon Creek has flush toilets, showers, a playground, a beach, trailer dump station and a boat ramp. To reach this campground, go 4.5 miles north of Shelbyville on Illinois State Route 128 to County Road 1750 north, then .9 mile east to County Road 1900 east, then north .35 mile to County Road 1785 north, then east 1.75 miles to County Road 2075 east then go south 1.7 miles.
Tent camping is always permitted, but for some sites not recommended. The banks are steep and it may be difficult to get to the water from many sites. 1 RV and 3 tents OR 4 tents are permitted for all
