JD, A/C's seem to scare a lot of people, and due to time and diagnostic costs they usually get an air conditioner replaced and then buy an extended service policy on the new one. There are really only three things that can go wrong with an air conditioner. 1 - something electrical, 2 - something mechanical, and 3 - something having to do with the sealed system (refrigerant). The majority of the time it is something with either the electrical system (capacitor or PTCR) or the fan (mechanical). If I were you, I'd have someone take a look at it and negotiate beforehand that they take the diagnostic time off of the purchase of a new one if it is non-repairable. Hope this helps - Giovanni

does it even hum? it may be mud dobbers have built a nest and jammed up the fan....had one from florida a couple of weeks ago that was coompletely full of nests! the furnace and water heater were completly clogged, and the fridge was full of em as well. if it will hum then go up and take the shroud off and see whats keeping it from freely moving. if its not even humming it could be a bad starter cap, or even the switch inside. if ya replace it, i'll take yer old one n fix it!

That's it? That's the entire question? No information? No trouble-shooting or diagnostics? I guess the answer then is yes, replace the unit. I should then blow.
